Simon Joyner (US)

It is no coincidence that Simon Joyner is often compared to maverick songwriters like Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, and Leonard Cohen. Or that his list of dedicated fans counts people such as Beck and Gillian Welch. Joyner is the real deal when it comes to great songwriting. A songwriter who consistently has put out one great record after another since the early 90’s on labels such as Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar. He has also created his own label, Grapefruit Records, where he has released records by artists such as Lambchop, Richard Youngs, Marisa Anderson, and The Dead C. His songs often seem simple, sparse, and with a dark and sombre tone. But there is great wisdom, poetry, and humor at play as well. It is quite simply one of America’s greatest living songwriters who will join us in Sønderho this summer. Or like Gillian Welch has stated: “Omaha has given us the reigning heir to Henry Miller’s dark emotional mirror, Townes Van Zandt’s three-chord moan, and Lou Reed’s warehouse minimalism: his name is Simon Joyner.”
