In 2018 we had the great pleasure of bringing renowned Norwegian hardanger fiddler Nils Økland to Fanø for a special concert with Esbjerg Ensemble. Økland is among the very finest Norwegian musicians. Not only a magnificent fiddler, but also a musician with a great ability to connect the deep roots of Norwegian folk music with elements of jazz, experimental rock and contemporary chamber music in a way which never feels forced. In the trio Lumen Drones his playing is at its most daring and cutting edge when he joins forces with Per Steinar Lie (guitars) and Ørjan Haaland (drums) – two musicians known from their work in the influential post-rock ensemble The Low Frequency in Stereo. This is fuzzy and free folk music with highly experimental nods to artists like Arvo Pärt, John Cale and Sonic Youth – but still with Økland’s distinct sound keeping a door open to the rich nordic folk music tradition. The new album, “Umbra”, was released at the end of 2019 by the excellent label Hubro and has already been hailed as a masterpiece by several journalists. One of the most exciting groups on the experimental nordic music scene right now, and we’re thrilled to present them on Fanø!
The concert is supported by PULS.
